CONDITION:
(1) The lyre movement, stamped Plymouth, Conn. (the firm did not replace the old die with one with the town's newer name, Thomaston, until about 1890) is in good original condition. The dial pan, alarm and hands all appear original. The dial is repainted. The modern case is in good condition but not quite the quality of the original violin cases made by Seth Thomas by special order in 1885. (2) The case is is in very good condition with original finish. The gilt geometric pattern band around the base and the trim on the door may be later additions. The paper dial and hands are new. The case has a nice cathedral gong. The original stenciled door glass is particularly nice.
