CONDITION:
case in its original finish with minor scrapes, scratches and dings, some polish residue around some of the brass ornaments, glasses and mirrors good, dial with losses to silvering, hands good, pendulum rod good, bob in old lacquer and with tarnish and minor staining, weights in old lacquer and with minor tarnish, movement plates with minor tarnish, escapement will need a bit of work, as there is no locking on the exit pallet, and escape wheel teeth have been slightly blunted. An unusual and highly individualistic clock typical of the quirky output of James Arthur. A machinist by trade, the clocks use involute gearing, and are more akin to machinery than to traditional clock work. The use of boxwood for the wheelwork was an idea aimed at reducing the weight of the mobiles. While we have handled other Arthur clocks, none of our previous offerings have been constructed to this design.

The movement sits on later supports and two channels have been carved in the vertical boards to accommodate the door locks on the movement. The dial is in excellent condition with no chips or hairlines. The beat scale sits on a custom stand on the bottom of case. The nickel plated weight has a minor ding on bottom rim. Mercury for the pendulum is included and must be hand delivered. The level of mercury in the photograph is simulated and may differ from actual amount. This impressive clock cost $135.00 in 1910.

Unknown, Massachusetts, 8 day, time and strike weight-driven brass movement Mass. shelf clock.
CONDITION:
It is hard to date this nicely made large mahogany and cherry shelf clock in an old finish. We feel it might be a centennial piece, c. 1875, but perhaps earlier or later. The reeded quarter columns have stop fluting on the top and bottom of the column. It is interesting that the piece just below the hood door is a copy of the same piece used on the Willard wall timepiece. The hood top looks more like a bottom bracket to a wall clock than a top piece. The brass movement is unusual for the design of the brass plates and the unusual way the verge is connected to the pendulum. the crutch wire comes down between the plates and extends out the back rather emerging at the top of the rear plate. The dial has age darkened and with some scattered stains. Overall a very interesting clock.

CONDITION:
Newer mahogany case probably dates to late19th or early 20th Century. Case is in good condition and the top of the door has been recently sanded down so that it closes easily. The two crude finials are of cast copper. The entire pendulum is a new construction with a strip of sheet copper for a suspension spring. The seatboard and movement risers are made of new wood and held to the movement with modern machine screws. The movement shows many signs of repairs, some old and some new, some well done and some not. The movement has a recoil escapement and countwheel and bell strike. Though both trains appear to function when tested manually, the old repairs and worn pivot holes will call for the movement to be serviced in the near future. Scribed circles from laying out the wheel train are evident on the front plate. The dark blue paint on the moon phase dial appears to have been applied over a silvered layer. Very nice engravings around the moon phase dial depict Zeus, Hermes, and humans reacting to them. Engraved chapter ring reads "Otto Van Meurs / Amsterdam ". Inner matte portion of dial with engraved scrolls and the head of a man. Otto Van Meurs (1717- 1783) was one of the leading clockmakers in 18th Century Amsterdam. An impressive musical tall clock by this maker is in the collections of the Harvard Art Museum.

CONDITION:
The case has an original, rubbed down finish. There is a very nice paper label under the lid of the urn. It is signed in ink "John Davidson", who invented this device. Whether the signature is authentic, we cannot say. The label is stamped "4001 ". The signed white enamel dial and beveled glass are fine. The old electrical wiring and bell mechanism are present and may need restoration. A plaque on the front shows at date of 1895. A time-only movement powers the clock and rotates a disk hidden within the urn. The disk has slots that correspond to different times of day. Memoranda, in the form of small dime-sized tablets, are placed within the slots. At the assigned time, a tablet falls through the slot, tips a brass tray, and triggers the battery powered alarm bell located in the base. The alarm would continue to sound until the tablet was removed. A wheel and pinion pair are missing from the outside of the back plate of the movement. These take power from the center arbor and transmit it to the contrate wheel which rotates the slotted disc within the urn. Lot comes with booklet of information about this type of clock. No memoranda discs are included. Small bin that catches the dics is incomplete.
