DESCRIPTION:
Forrest & Son, Glasgow, Scotland, "Patented Combined Barometer and Showcard", reverse painted and gilt glass reading "Taddy & Co.'s 'Orbit' Brand Tobacco" in a molded frame with narrow shelf along bottom edge and shaped pediment with trademark monogram, the integrated aneroid barometer with enamel dial reading the same as the glass with horizontally mounted mercury thermometer showing the temperature in Fahrenheit
CONDITION:
wood frame with minor dings, small losses around the edge of the bottom shelf, black paint and gilding are good, white paint on glass is flaking badly, screw hole in bottom center, very nice rear paper label, barometer dial is good, thermometer good. Taddy & Co. was a seller of tobacco, and one of the most important in Britain by the end of the 19th century. During the 1890s Taddy & Co. became well known for their cigarette trading cards which remain highly collectible. Taddy's "Orbit" pipe tobacco which was introduced in 1893.
