DESCRIPTION:
Müller & Kern, Breslau, Germany (current day Wroclaw, Poland) for Hamman & Koch, New York & Paris, chiming mantel clock, 8 day, time and strike with chime playing on eight nested bells, spring driven brass movement in a heavy black slate case with brass trim on a stepped and molded base with turned bun feet, polished black slate dial with incised roman numerals, gilt hands, all topped by a large cast gilt eagle with outstretched wings.
CONDITION:
the black slate case is in excellent condition. The brass trim along the top edge has been glued back on and some of the glue is visible at the seam. The polished dial is very good, as are the incised gold numerals. Original hands and beveled glass. The large rectangular movement is signed by the maker and the retailer. A third stamp reads "Chevillier Fnt / A Paris". The chime plays an unknown tune on 8 bells and strikes on a cathedral gong. The inside of the case has been lined with red velvet panels in recent times. The eagle finial is a separate piece so may or may not have started life with the clock. It does look appropriate, and is in very good condition.
